Adult Literacy Program

The HANAC Adult Literacy Program serves the large multi-ethnic immigrant and refugee population that reside in the Western Queens area. Our program operates from September to June, with classes meeting Monday through Thursday evenings from 6:00-9:00 pm. We are located in 3 sites in Queens: George T. Douris Tower, IS 204 both in Astoria and PS 19 in Corona.

Our ESOL program offers oral and written English instruction for ESOL literacy, and can accommodate any level of student, from those with virtually no literacy skills to those with advanced levels of English language proficiency.

The program focuses on oral language acquisition, integrating various methods and instruction appropriate for each level, such as Basic Literacy, Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced. Instruction is enhanced through the use of computer technology in the classroom.
